Kerry Street Community School |
(This is what our website used to look like)
| In 2006 a Smarter than Smoking grant led to the creation of a Healthy Active Kids mural on the south wall of our school, facing Forrest Rd. |
After a lot of determination, passion, and hard work by the founding families, our school was incorporated in April 1981. It was called Fremantle Alternative School. When we moved to our current building we changed our name to Kerry Street Community School, because we are on the corner of Forrest and Kerry Streets. Over the past ten years our enrolments have varied from 6 to 40 students. Currently we have 28 kids attending our school, from 25 families, who live in or near Hamilton Hill and in various suburbs south of the river, from Willetton to Singleton. In 2006 we registered as a kindy to help attract families looking for community education right from the start of their schooling experience. We also secured the use of the house next door on Forrest Road. We plan to build up our numbers and eventually use the house for classes, hopefully buying it in five years time. In the meantime we are able to use the backyard for playing space, which is a great benefit as our playing space has been limited. We have been lucky enough to secure a Commonwealth grant to redo our playground and get new carpet and security, so we have had a bit of a facelift this year, too! We have always been involved in our local community. Some of the things we have done in the past few years include: a Values project with other small schools focusing on kids interacting with their local community; painting a bus stop across the road; stalls at the Samson Park Children's Fiesta; involvement in the Fremantle Festival Parade; and regular participation in Clean Up Australia, picking up rubbish at Manning Park. Over the years our philosophy and what we have to offer has remained relatively constant. That is, an accessible choice for families with faith in their children's ability and desire to learn and a belief in community education. |
"At one point we worked out of a hall where we had to take everything down off the walls and put everything away in roll-away cupboards every Friday and get it out again every Monday" ~Geraldine |

In 2006 the students made a giant chess set. This magnificent dragon "knight" was made by Wylie in year 5. |
