Governance

“Being on the board is a bit of a win win. You do feel like you’re contributing to the community and supporting the school to grow and thrive, but it has also given me so much. Connection, fulfilment, and some quite concrete and diverse new skills I never imagined ever developing.”

Tania Ivey – Former Board Chair

Kerry Street Community School is not just an independent educational institution, it is also an incorporated, not-for profit Association with its own constitution. All members of the school community make up our Association, which is governed by the School Board.

Who is The School Board?

The Kerry Street Community School Board is elected annually at our Annual General Meeting, which all members of the school community (or “Association”) are encouraged to attend. The Board is comprised of elected parents and community members, the Principal and a member of the teaching staff. It has the legal responsibility for deciding and fulfilling the stated objectives of the school, represents our school community and is responsible for the governance of the school.

The Role of The Board

In practice, our Board deals primarily with governance, policy, strategic planning, budgeting, and unresolved concerns or grievances. To facilitate the management and administration of the school and the provision of the educational program, the Board appoints the Principal and delegates practical responsibility and day-to-day management of the school to them. The Board supports and monitors the Principal who in turn regularly reports on school matters to the Board at its monthly meetings.
